Refurbished and used furniture can be a smart way to furnish a UAE home or office for less, and it keeps good pieces out of landfill. But "used" covers a wide range, from nearly new to well-worn. Knowing what to check before you pay helps you avoid surprises.

Understand condition grades

Many sellers describe condition with a short label. The label is only useful if you know what it means, so always read the seller's definitions and look at the photos.

Checked items vs unchecked owner listings

Check for smell, stains and structure

Photos can't show everything. Whether you view in person or ask questions on WhatsApp, cover these three areas.

Smell

Fabric and foam absorb odours from smoke, pets, cooking and damp. In a closed apartment during summer, smells can settle in. Ask directly whether the item comes from a smoke-free or pet-free home, and check on delivery.

Stains and surface wear

• Look closely at seat cushions, armrests and headboards, where wear shows first.
• Check wood and laminate for water rings, swelling at the edges or peeling.
• Ask for close-up photos of any area that looks unclear.

Structure

• Sit on sofas and chairs and feel for sagging, creaking or uneven support.
• Open and close drawers and doors; they should run smoothly and close fully.
• Check bed frames and tables for wobble at the joints.
• For flat-pack items, check whether all fittings are included.

Structural problems are usually harder and more costly to fix than cosmetic ones.

Measure before you buy

UAE apartments vary a lot in layout, and a piece that looks right in a photo may not fit your room, lift or doorway. Before ordering, measure:

• The space where the item will go, including clearance for doors and walkways
• Doorway widths and any tight corners in your corridor
• The building's lift, if the item can't be taken apart
• Ceiling height for tall wardrobes and bunk beds

Compare these with the item's listed dimensions. If dimensions aren't listed, ask for them.

Plan delivery and assembly

Large furniture often needs to be partly dismantled for transport and put back together at your home. Before you order, clarify:

• Whether delivery is included and when it can happen
• Whether your building requires you to book the service lift or notify management for deliveries
• Whether the item arrives assembled or needs assembly
• Who will do the assembly

6. Is it assembled, and are all parts and fittings included?
7. For appliances or electronics: does it work fully, and is any warranty included?

Clear answers are a good sign. Vague answers on key points are a reason to slow down.
